Team Members

Sven Bjorn Borg
Sven has been with d-con since its humble beginnings, and is responsible for punctuating, finances, guarding the office from rabid dogs and loud noises, and acting as mediator amongst the other members. Dr. Borge is well-known as the world's foremost (and perhaps only) underwater-basket-weaving expert. Sven has recently published no less than 3 books, Klingon Grammar and Vocabulary for humans, Life among the Grapes, and Escher, Bach, Gödel: A gigantic elastic bungalow. In it's copious spare time, the Sven enjoys playing the harpsichord and diagramming sentences. Sven is Chief of Staff and Director of Intelligence in the UPICN,LLC.

Dr. Bob William "The Orange" Lavoisier
a.k.a. Dr. Henry Parsons
Dr. N, as we like to call him, is officially the initiator of the Daily Connotations Company, and also holds important Offices in the VVIIPP society of America and The Department of Redundancy Department, which is a place where he holds an important office in the department of redundancy. Henry also spent a good deal of his life studying the behavior of Walruses (Walri?) in the wild, inspired by a long-running correspondence with Mr. J. Lennon, who, in fact, convinced "The Orange" that he was, in fact, a walrus. Dr. Parsons' curriculum vitae is rounded out by his extensive family history (including a brother, Alan), and double Ph.D. honors in Botany and the Study of Scandinavian Languages. Recently, Dr. Henry Parsons was elected president of the UPICN,LLC

The Doctor
a.k.a. Dr. What??
Dr. What joins us now as a member of d-Con in very good standing. It is important that the doctor not be confused with his slightly-more-popular brother, Doctor Who, who has carved a niche for himself in the field of time travel. Dr. What never developed the talent for time travel, and has the ability to visit only two distinct temporal locations: The beheading of John the Baptist and that one time when Stanley met Livingstone (or was it Livingstone met Stanley?) Consequently, he spends much of his time knitting (the scarves, natch) on the planet Gallifrey whilst (and at the same time) contemplating Nietzschean philosophies and memorizing much of Immanuel Kant's work, both in the original German.

Dr. Phelealabean
Dr. Phelealabean also uses the alias Dr. Olga Olathe Parsons-Uhlmer. Dr. Parsons-Uhlmer is a sister to Henry and Alan. She has a dual honorary doctorate in Arabian Literature and Language. She also has teaching experience at the University of Rekjavik which was held in a small grass-covered hut. She iswidowed after an incident involving her husband and abandonment which she is not allowed to discuss pending criminal charges. Now that she is alone, she enjoys spending summers with her brother, Henry, in his summer home, The Parsonon.

Accolades

There's a reason this section is at the bottom of the column. Um, I think someone called us 'interesting' once, maybe. That's about it.

It has been some time since I have posted, I feel bad. Here is the news in my eyes. Newsworthy topics include:

1) Sarah and I will be "performing" in a celebration of music of the last 150 years. Sarah is modeling 1920's flapper clothing and I am singing tunes most commonly heard in the restrooms of the NYSE (during the 1920's).

2) Of perhaps more importance....I am now the newsletter editor for Iowa Bluebird Conservationists, a new bluebird conservation organization formed just yesterday (Sunday) in Emerson. The organization will be composed of retired, bluebird enthusiasts who argue over the formalities of parlimentary procedure and can't decide if the person wearing blue earrings qualifies as being the treasurer over the kid in the blue shirt.

3) Katherine Hepburn died today....sob....tear...okay

4) Everyone's favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger is considering a run for the California governor's seat. When asked by reporters what his campaign slogan/mission would be he said "Very likely, I'll be back!"

5) If you haven't already figured out I am making more of the news than there really is. Sob....tear...okay

6) I had something planned for this spot. Something brilliant, but I forgot.

7) Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is being honored (?) by a new book written by Hart Seely. Taken from actual transcript from Defense Department press releases Seely has composed a series of poems based on Rumsfeld's free verse speaking. Click here.

I'm Dr. Henry Parsons and that's news to me. (if reading this at midnight insert the clause..."Good night and good morning.)

This is interesting. And also might possibly change the study of linguistics as we know it. What's really funny about it though, is that it seems so obvious! OF COURSE, Mandarin has tones, and we know that intonation and music and melody are processed by the "other" side of the brain than are words and logic. Two plus two does equal four. It just takes us a while to realize it.

This site contains an animated version of Tom Lehrer's Elements. It requires Macromedia Flash, but if you've already got that it's worth the approximately 15 seconds it takes to load.

This is kind of classy - I like the update.

Another thing that I must commend Blogger for is the way the Advertisements actually kind of compliment the content of the page.

A list of music inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. For better or for worse. In honor of the beginning of the six-month countdown until the glory and majesty of Return of the King is unleashed on Hollywood.

Johan de Meij's Symphony.

Movements
1. Gandalf
2. Lothlorien
3. Gollum
4. Journey in the Dark
5. Hobbits.

The "Movie" Music

First, the official titles to these songs, according to the FOTR Soundtrack, are: The Prophecy; Concerning Hobbits; The Shadow of the Past; The Treason of Isengard; The Black Rider; At the Sign of the Prancing Pony; A Knife in the Dark, Flight to the Ford; Many Meetings; The Council of Elrond; The Ring Goes South; A Journey in the Dark; The Bridge of Khazad-Dum, Lothlorien; The Great River; Amon Hen, The Breaking of the Fellowship; (gasp) and May it Be. Listening to this is supposed to make you feel like you're gazing out over the sweeping goodness of New Zealand/Middle Earth. Of course, like all good movie scores, the final judgement is in two steps: Firstly, if you noticed it during the movie, it's too obvious, and secondly, you should wake up in the middle of the night with the grandeur of the orchestrations running through your head and then fall asleep dreaming of a better place. Does it make the cut? You decide.

The infamous "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins"

As sung by our good friend Mr. Leonard Nimoy. The Star Trek/Lord of the Rings connection is enough to make all true übergeeks swoon, simply the singing does it for normal humans. Oh, please, no, not my ears! Of course, featuring the bassoon solo by, oh, that one guy (or was it a girl?) who plays the bassoon on Leonard Nimoy's The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Oh well.
Now available, for your enjoyment, in movie format as well. Be warned!

Blind Guardian

As we all know, all good things in life must have a garage band to support them. Blind Guardian fills this part (obviously, as it is in this list) for Lord of the Rings. Their sound sorta leans to melodic hard rock (what?). They actually have at least one whole cd roughly based on the Trilogy. And if that's not enough, they're German! Too cool.
    Roster:
  • Hansi Kürsch, Vocals

  • André Olbrich, Guitars

  • Marcus Siepen, Guitars

  • Thomen Stauch, Drums
